People, Pests & Pesticides Myths vs. Reality

What's a pesticide? What's toxicity? How do we deal with the public's fears about pesticide use? How do we ensure our personal safety when handling pesticides? We  also examined diseases associated with pests and the need for proper pest management to protect health and property.

PCOs and Public Health

The fact that Bug Off Pest Control Center provided public health training for the New York City Department of Health and for the New York City Parks Department created great interest in the pest control community for us to present an abridged version of this special training program for pest control operators.
The symposium dealt with federal and state regulations regarding basic principles and practices. We reviewed application equipment, pesticide use and IPM techniques. The major pests that impact human health were studied in detail, particularly mosquitoes. An overview of the principal diseases transmitted by these pests was also presented.   Presented by
Steve Walsh

Occasional Invaders and the Perfect Perimeter Treatment

This program on perimeter treatments dealt with inspection and identification of factors conducive to perimeter pest infestations.  There was an overview of the major occasional invaders (clover mites, centipedes, millipedes, sowbugs, pillbugs, crickets, earwigs, boxelder bugs, beetles, firebrats, silverfish, ticks, fleas, wasps, bees, spiders, ants and roaches).  We discussed how to perform a proper treatment using various types of equipment and appropriate products.

Progressive Pest Management for Food Establishments
Pest control specialists learned of the health implications of foodstuffs infestations posed by the most common pests encountered in food areas: roaches, mice, rats and flies.  Integrated pest management protocols were also reviewed: inspection, housekeeping/maintenance, treatment options, monitoring, safety procedures and gaining customer cooperation.  We also examined the proper selection of products and equipment appropriate for use in food areas.

Pesticide Types, Modes of Action and Overcoming Resistance
What are the different types of pesticides? What are their modes of action? What are their effects on health and the environment?  This seminar offered a comparative analysis of organics, inorganics, anticoagulants, calcium mobilizers, growth regulators and others.  A study of resistance explained its causes and offered advice on how to manage it.

Obscure Organisms, Delusions and Phobias
It's very common for pest management specialists to encounter three main symptoms when dealing with the general public: Entomophobia (fear of insects), Chemophobia (fear of chemicals) and Delusional Parasitosis (the belief that insects are present where none exist).  These are conditions a pest control specialist must learn to recognize and overcome.

Regulatory Compliance Forum
The purpose of the program was to help PCOs better understand state regulations and thereby reduce the risk of being cited, fined or suspended.  Another goal of the seminar was to forge a better working relationship between the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and the people they regulate. Acknowledging the value of the program and understanding that Bug Off Pest Control Center'sgoal is to ensure that PCOs be well informed, act professionally and present a positive image for the industry,  the DEC representative noted that Bug Off's efforts in the fields of education and technical support are "an asset to the industry."
